Dr. Katherine Loflin, the “City Doctor”, is an internationally award-winning placemaking consultant, speaker, and instructor in cities around the world. She is a two-time TEDx speaker on placemaking and an invited member of the global Placemaking Leadership Council. She has been quoted widely in the press including Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Winnipeg Free Press, Crain’s Detroit Business, Miami Herald, Pioneer Press, Charlotte Observer, CBS News, The Atlantic, Axiom News and LA Times. If you’ve been researching your family tree for awhile, or are just getting started on the journey, you probably have some questions about the use of DNA to help you on your way.
The Tallahassee Genealogical Society wants to help. On Thursday, January 18th, and again on Wednesday, January 24th, from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m., TGS member Jay P. Collins will lead a question and answer session at the LeRoy Collins Public Library, Program Room B, on the subject of DNA and your genealogy.
NOTE: this will be a group opportunity for general questions about how DNA works and how to apply it to your research. NO individual counseling will be provided.

These sessions are FREE and open to anyone interested in learning more about genealogical applications for DNA.

The Tallahassee Genealogical Society is sponsoring an all-day “Photographs Seminar” on Saturday, January 27, 2018 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Center for Workforce Development, Tallahassee Community College, 444 Appleyard Dr.
The presenters will provide the attendees with several strategies for working with photographs, and identifying and dating family photographs.

Sandra Varry, MFA, MLIS, CA, DAS, taught traditional and digital photography for over a decade before becoming a full time archivist, specializing in historic photograph collections. She will present two Photographic Preservation sessions: Strategies for working with Physical Collections and Strategies for working with Digital Collections.

Maureen Taylor, The Photo Detective, is an internationally recognized expert on historic photograph identification, photo preservation and family history research. Sought out by clients all over the world from as far away as New Zealand, her pioneering work in historic photo research is unprecedented, evidenced by her success in solving photo mysteries. She is the author of several books, scholarly articles and online columns. Ms. Taylor will present on Identifying and Dating Family Photographs.

Attendees will receive topic-specific handout materials, a continental breakfast, and bottled water throughout the day. Those registering for the seminar no later than January 20th have the option of purchasing a bag lunch. Seminar registration (only) is: Society Member $30 seminar; Non-member $35.

THE TALLAHASSEE WWII HISTORICAL SOCIETY Invites You to Our Gatherings of World War II Veterans and Friends @ LAKEVIEW BAPTIST CHURCH FELLOWSHIP HALL

The World War II Historical Society will pay tribute to the late Abe Schestopol, Lt. Colonial, USAF, Ret. With a presentation of one of the talks he gave on April 28, 2007, entitled “My Life Through the 20th Century.” It begins with his impressions as a child and events surrounding World War I, the Great Depression, and events leading up to World War II.  Abe spent the war in China flying as a navigator on a Billy Mitchell B-25 bomber. He also served in Korea and Viet Nam retiring from the Air
Force as a Lt. Col. Among his medals is the Silver Star. His life spanned most of the 20th Century and his experiences and observations are both interesting and enlightening and certainly entertaining.

Rare Chinese and Japanese WW II artifacts will be on display.

This popular event offers an array of performances, activities, and history for the whole family!

Visitors can learn about Florida’s history from exhibitors like the State’s Archaeological Research Lab and Mission San Luis. Or, visitors can explore science with local exhibitors such as MoLab., Inc. As an added bonus, the Pilot Club will be providing complimentary bicycle helmets fitted to protect our young historians. Live performances and activities such as face painting, button making, and a variety of games will also be available.

From history and science to face painting and performances, there is something for everyone at Children’s Day! Parking and admission are free. Some activities require tickets that can be purchased at the event.
