In the first comprehensive and complete exhibit of its kind, Mysteries Below Ground: The Architecture of Ant Nests explores the intricate workings of 25 underground ant nests. This exhibit will reveal the enormous range of size and complexity of ant nest structure and reflects the range of scales in which ants live their lives. The exhibit also dives into Dr. Walter Tschinkel’s method of metal casting and the ways in which metal casting reveals a complete, precise and detailed version of ant nest architecture. Dr. Tschinkel’s casts have been featured in 16 museums around the world, from Paris to Hong Kong, including two casts at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. This exhibit will only be here until December 31, 2018, so don’t miss this extraordinary opportunity.

Frenchtown Farmers Market
Oct 20 @ 9:00 am – 1:00 pm

The Frenchtown farmers market will reopen on March 5th at 524 North MLK Blvd. In partnership with the Community Redevelopment Agency, the farmers market represents a first step in plans to develop a local food business incubator on the property.

The project, led by Frenchtown Neighborhood Improvement Association, is an effort to improve opportunity for people of color, women, veterans and students. The goal is to diversify the local economy, both by product and proprietor, in order to create more resilient, engaged, safe and thriving communities.

And what better place to start than Frenchtown.

Opening day will feature live music, guest speakers and host of local vendors with handmade and locally grown products. The Frenchtown market will open every Saturday, from 9am to 1pm throughout the year.

Vendor Information

Vendor inquiries from across the Big Bend region are also welcome. The Frenchtown farmers market is the only food retail opportunity in the area with purchase incentive programs that improve families’ ability to purchase fresh food, and also expand the sales potential for market vendors.

Vendor info sessions will be held Wednesday, February 17th @ 12:30pm and Saturday, February 20th at 3:00pm, at the market’s new location, 524 North MLK Blvd. in Tallahassee.

Puppies in the Pool @ Trousdell Aquatics Center
Oct 20 @ 11:30 am – 3:30 pm
Puppies in the Pool @ Trousdell Aquatics Center | Tallahassee | Florida | United States

It is time once again for you to get out of the pool while your canine companion jumps in! The 13th annual Puppies in the Pool event is back at the Trousdell Aquatics Center (activity pool only), located at 298 John Knox Road.

Dogs will be divided into two groups and allotted certain swim times. Times are the same both days.
Dogs under 40 pounds: 1 – 2 p.m.
Dogs over 40 pounds: 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.; 2:30 – 3:30 p.m.
Since space is limited, pre-registration is encouraged. Entry fees are $4 per person and $4 per dog. Express Puppy Passes are now on sale at Trousdell. The pool is open from 11:30 a.m. – 8 p.m. for registration. Citizens wanting to attend Puppies in the Pool can bring their pet’s paperwork, prepay the entrance fee and select the time slot that works best for them and their pooch(es). They will then be given an Express Puppy Pass, which allows them to bypass lines on October 13-14 and head straight for the pool.

All dogs 6 months or older are welcome to come show off their best doggie paddle. All dog owners must bring current health information on each animal, as dogs without these materials will not be permitted in the pool. Vaccinations must be current for rabies, Bordetella and one of the following: DAPP, DA2PP or DHPP. Dogs must also have had a negative fecal test within the past year and be spayed or neutered. Also, this is the dog’s time to swim, thus no humans will be allowed into the activity pool with their canine friend(s) due to regulations set by the Leon County Public Health Department.

If you’d like to get your dog cleaned up before the car ride home, stop by the dog wash station on your way out! For your convenience, Pets Ad Litem (PAL) will have this set up just outside the pool and will be accepting donations. PAL is an alliance of advocates and professionals providing a legal voice for animals.
