Mysteries Below Ground @ Tallahassee Museum
Jun 11 – Dec 31 all-day
Mysteries Below Ground @ Tallahassee Museum | Tallahassee | Florida | United States

In the first comprehensive and complete exhibit of its kind, Mysteries Below Ground: The Architecture of Ant Nests explores the intricate workings of 25 underground ant nests. This exhibit will reveal the enormous range of size and complexity of ant nest structure and reflects the range of scales in which ants live their lives. The exhibit also dives into Dr. Walter Tschinkel’s method of metal casting and the ways in which metal casting reveals a complete, precise and detailed version of ant nest architecture. Dr. Tschinkel’s casts have been featured in 16 museums around the world, from Paris to Hong Kong, including two casts at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. This exhibit will only be here until December 31, 2018, so don’t miss this extraordinary opportunity.

PREDICTABLY UNPREDICTABLE: What can we know about future weather? – RAZOR Lecture Series @ Challenger Learning Center of Tallahassee | Tallahassee | Florida | United States

Jeffrey Chagnon, Ph.D. | Assistant Professor | Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Science, Florida State University
Why is it that tides and eclipses can be predicted accurately years in advance but a weather forecast may be wrong after a few days? Why are we able to predict climate changes decades and centuries in advance when our day-to-day weather forecasts are so often wrong? How are weather and climate forecasts made? What progress have we made and where are we going? How do we make use of powerful computers to make the most reliable forecasts? What are the fundamental limits on the reliability of those forecasts? This lecture will tackle all of these questions lying at the heart of modern day weather and climate prediction. It will be demonstrated how the intersection between theory and practice leads both to exciting technological advances as well as a deeper understanding of our natural world.
Dr. Jeffrey Chagnon is an assistant professor in the Department of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences at Florida State University where he lectures and conducts research on the dynamics and predictability of weather and climate. Originally from Long Island, NY, he received his Ph.D. from The Pennsylvania State University and was a research fellow at the University of Reading, UK prior to his move to Tallahassee.

CRACKING THE COSMIC CODE AND RIDING THE WAVES – RAZOR Lecture series @ Challenger Learning Center of Tallahassee | Tallahassee | Florida | United States

William H. “Bill” Green, Ph.D. | Research Professor | Physics Department | Florida State University
This talk will review our current understanding of the history and fate of the Universe, and will include discussion of some key current questions such as: How far back in time do we know what went on?; What is the evidence for Dark Matter and Dark Energy? What can Gravity Waves tell us?; and, Does the Universe hold any major surprises?
After earning a PhD in Physical Chemistry at the University of South Carolina, Bill was awarded a NAS/NRC Fellowship at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C., where he became a Research Scientist studying chemical lasers and molecular energy transfer processes. Bill earned a law degree at Georgetown and returned to his native Florida and in 1979 co-founded Hopping Green & Sams, P.A. in Tallahassee. The next thirty years, he studied cosmology via sabbaticals at the University of Cambridge, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory/the University of California–Berkeley, and advanced study institutes.
