National MagLab Open House 2020 @ National High Magnetic Field Laboratory
Feb 22 @ 10:00 am – 3:00 pm

Come see the world’s largest and highest powered magnet lab during our FREE annual event that features fun for visitors of every age: hands-on demonstrations, self-guided tours of our fleet of world-record magnets, delicious food, and the chance to interact with our expert scientists. Get an up-close look at the world’s strongest magnet – the 45 tesla hybrid – where there will be special demonstrations and performances throughout the day.

This year’s theme – TIME – aligns with the MagLab’s 25th anniversary and celebrates science past, present and future. Special time-themed experiences only available this year include the ability to turn back time with a laminar flow demonstration, timed radar races, crystals as timekeepers, ancient geological samples, and some special Dr. Who-time lord demos. We’ll also have a travel through time scavenger hunt and a time vault where you can predict the future that will be opened at the MagLab’s 50th Open House in 2045.

Weird but Wonderful Carnivorous Plants of North Florida @ LeRoy Collins Leon County Main Public Library
Mar 12 @ 6:00 pm

Most people have at least heard of carnivorous plants and maybe even grown a Venus fly trap at some time in their lives. The plants have fascinated scientists since Linneaus and Darwin because they upset the food chain by eating animals.

But, most Tallahasseans are not aware that our local forests, savannas, and bogs are host to over 30 species of these interesting plants. Dr. Tom Miller of Florida State University will talk about the diversity of these plants in our area, some about how they work and their ecology, and where you might go to observe these plants on your own.
