Banding Endangered Red-cockaded Woodpeckers at Pebble Hill Plantation @ Pebble Hill Plantation
May 8 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Banding Endangered Red-cockaded Woodpeckers at Pebble Hill Plantation @ Pebble Hill Plantation | Thomasville | Georgia | United States

Pebble Hill Plantation in Thomasville, Georgia is pleased to announce the upcoming program, “Banding Endangered Red-cockaded Woodpeckers at Pebble Hill Plantation,” on Saturday, May 8 at 10:00 a.m. The program is being presented by Joe Burnam, Wildlife Biologist with the Wildlife Conservation Section of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

Did you know Pebble Hill Plantation is home to one of the Southeast’s rarest birds – the red-cockaded woodpecker? Through many years of prescribed fire and careful forest management, Pebble Hill’s longleaf pine forest has provided important foraging and nesting habitat for this special bird.

Mr. Burnam’s program will begin at the Pebble Hill Learning Center where he will discuss longleaf ecology and management in the Red Hills Region of Southwest Georgia and how this management has been successful in maintaining excellent habitat for the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker (RCW) and other important species. Participants will then join Mr. Burnam in the Pebble Hill woods to observe the specialized techniques of RCW surveys and banding.

During the months of April and May, Mr. Burnam surveys the RCW family groups on Pebble Hill for nesting success by using a specialized camera called a Wireless Cavity Peeper Camera. Field trip participants will learn how this technology is used by observing the status of the young nesting birds in the Pebble Hill cavities and asses if they are ready for banding.

Biologists across the RCW’s breeding range use the method of banding to study the movements, behavior, and survival of the birds. Bird banding uniquely marks individuals with a small color and number-coded leg band so the birds can be recognized, allowing biologists to track the individuals over time. Mr. Burnam will demonstrate this fascinating research technique and give participants a rare, close-up look at the recently hatched RCWs.

Mr. Burnam earned a BSEd and MS in Wildlife Ecology and Management from the University of Georgia. He works primarily with the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker on state and private land in Southwest Georgia and helps manage upland pine habitat on Southwest Georgia Wildlife Management Areas.

Tickets are $20.00 per adult and $10.00 per child (ages 18 and under). Space is limited and advance registration is required by Friday, May 7, 2021. Visit https://pebble-hill-plantation.ticketleap.com/ to register.

Added safety measures will be in place for the protection of the guests, speaker, and staff. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes, bring water, and binoculars (Pebble Hill will have a limited number available for loan). Participants are invited to bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the grounds of Pebble Hill after the program.

Pebble Hill Plantation is a historic home with a history dating back to the early 1800s. The plantation was established by one of Thomas County’s founders, Thomas Jefferson Johnson. At the turn of the 20th century, the Hanna family of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the property and enjoyed it as winter home and sporting estate. Pebble Hill has been open for tours since October 1983 due to the generosity of its last owner, Elisabeth (Pansy) Ireland Poe, who willed that her property be opened to the public. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Pebble Hill offers visitors the chance to learn the rich history of this historic site and the people who once lived and worked here.
